Win Single and Each Way Single Bets

Win Single:- This is the most basic bet you can have. It is simply a bet, that your horse that you have selected must finish first. Second or third are no good, even if you were just beaten.

Each Way Single:- This is two bets in one, and costs double the unit stake, e.g. £10 Each Way will cost £20. The first part of the bet is a win single, and this part of the bet must come first only, and the stake will be times the full odds taken.

The second part of the bet is for the horse to get 'in the frame' - this is generally to get placed first, second, or third, sometimes forth as well. The amount of places on offer is determnined by the amount of runners, and the odds paid are a quarter or fifth of the full odds, which also is determnined by the amount of runners.

The Place odds, and amount of places paid are determined by the following;-

1-4 runners
Win only. No 2nd place

5-7 runners
1st and 2nd place only. Paid at 1/4 of full odds

8- ? runners
1st 2nd & 3rd place only. Paid at 1/5 of full odds

12-15 runners HANDICAP RACE ONLY
1st 2nd & 3rd place only. Paid at 1/4 of full odds

16-? runners HANDICAP RACE ONLY
1st 2nd 3rd And 4th place only. Paid at 1/4 of full odds

Some bookies offer a fifth place for really big races, check the Racing Post or your bookies as to whether your bet does pay an extra place. e.g. The Grand National

So as an example, if you bet a horse £10 Each Way (total £20 stake), and it is placed- second, at 10/1. The win part of the bet is a loser, but the place part has been placed within the 'frame' because it came second. The place part will pay at a fifth of the full odds of 10/1, which is 2/1 (10 divided by 5) So you will win £20, plus your £10 back, a toal of £30.

If the horse won, the bet will pay £10 at full odds of 10/1 = £110, and £30 for the place on top, a total of £140. The place part of the bet counts winning, the same as second or third, so it still pays £30. At first it seems complicated, but after a few times you will find it easier once you have done it a few times.

It is not worth betting Each Way at odds under 4/1 at a Quarter, or 5/1 at a fifth. This is because the bet costs double the stake, and if you do not have place odds of at least evens, it is not worth betting if the horse gets placed only.
