Selecting your Bet

When you fancy three or four horses, most people will put them in a 'Multiple' or 'Full Cover' bet such as a Lucky 15. The main reason for this, is because if all of them win, you want to have a good payday. This is fine, but there are some factors to remember when picking the bet to put your horses in.

The prices of your horses matter. If you have big prices, then you want singles in your bet. If they are short prices, then a Patent, or Lucky 15 may not be suitable. What is the point having singles in your bet, when a pound on a, lets say a 4/7 shot, has £1.57 returns. These prices need to be in doubles and upwards to come to some decent money. Why pay for 15 bets in a Lucky 15, when a 11 bet Yankee will suffice.

So with that in mind, a Yankee would suit better, and costs four bets less. This saves you money, and you will still have the full stake on your trebles and your accumulator if you are lucky, and you will still win big.

You can even increase the unit stake of your bet if you want, so you spend around the same money. So you could have a £1.50 yankee for £16.50, and if it wins, you will get one and a half times more, which beats the £1 Lucky 15, even with the 10% bonus for all four.

The same can be said for a Patent with 7 bets, and a Trixie, which has 4 bets. These are both bets for three selections, and if the prices are short, why pay for an extra three singles with the Patent? You can have a £2 trixie for nearly the same cost as a £1 Patent. The returns if you win, will be just short of double of what the Patent pays, as your unit stake is double.

Also, when betting Each Way on a Yankee, or Lucky 15, it will double the cost of your bet. Try to consider how much just a couple of places will pay? It is wise to just have a win Yankee or Lucky 15 with an Each Way Accumulator will suffice, and this will save you half the cost.

One factor with these bets are, that once you have got four out of four winners, you have won plenty of money. But, you have just one loser, the amount of bets that you have left running for you is halved. This means that your bet is a shadow of it's former self, as you are likely to get some losers in your bet.

Lets have a look at a Yankee. There are generally no bonuses with this bet. This is what your bet looks like before the bet starts.

You can see that just one loser, makes any bet with horse A, become a losing bet. You have only four bets remaining ( A Trixie) If you have another loser, you will have only a double left, yes, just one bet. This is similar for all Multiple bets, a Lucky 15 with one loser, becomes a patent with 7 bets left. Over 50% of the value of your bet has gone, with just one horse going down.

Some people choose to stagger their bet with different amounts, according to the likelyhood of that part of the bet coming in, and saving money on the bets that have a high chance of not winning. So the trebles, have less chance of winning than the doubles, simply because a double only requires two winning horses, and a treble needs three.

If you was going to bet a £1 Yankee = £11
6 doubles @ £1=£6
4 trebles @ £1=£4
1 Accumulator @ £1=£1
Total £11
This is how the Yankee breaks down into separate bets

Put the bet on separately to save outlay

6 doubles @ £1=£6
4 trebles @ £0.50=£2
1 Accumulator @ £0.25=£0.25
Total £8.25
Obviously for all winners, you get less, but how often have you got all winners on a Yankee? Not every day!

Put the bet on separately to increase likely return
6 doubles @ £1.50=£9
4 trebles @ £0.50=£2
1 Accumulator @ £0.10=£0.10
Total £11.10
This is when you dont mind spending £11, but the bet is proportioned as to what will be the likely outcome- e.g. Just two winners. You have one and a half the stake on the doubles, so you will win more for fewer winners. Caution! You win less if they all win, so you make the choice!
