There are different types grades, and this is dependant on whether the race is a Jump race, or a Flat race.
Jump Racing Grades
Jump races are divided into seven different classes. This is dependant on how old the horse is and it's capability. There are seven classes. Class 7 is lowest, Class 1 is highest, and this is divided into three grades. Horses need to have a high rating in handicaps, to be entered into these races. The higher grades have more the prize money, and horses progress up the grades as they race better.
Class 1 - Grade 1. Weight carried, is acertained by age, and sex
Class 1 - Grade 2. Weight carried, is acertained by age, past form, and handicap.
Class 1 - Grade 3. Weight carried is acertained by Handicap.
There are no separate grades in any other classes (two to seven).
Flat Racing
Flat races are divided into seven different classes. This is dependant on how old the horse is, and it's capability. There are seven classes. Class 1- Group 1 is divided into three groups. The weight carried is determined by how old the horse is, it's capability and handicap.
Class 1- Group 2 is internationally recognised but is not an important race
Class 1- Group 3 is recognised as an important domestic race
