Race Catagories

It is sometimes confusing when you look at the kinds of different races there are, and the differing grades. I will give you a brief rundown on how to determine the grading of horse races, and how this affects the horses in the race. I shall give the terminology used a explanation. Jump Racing and Flat Racing are divided into categories and grades, with a few differences dependant whether they are flat or jump

Novice
Races open to young horses that have not yet won

Maiden
Races open to horses that have not won.

Apprentice
Races open to young apprentice jockeys.

Juvenile
Races open to young horses from three to four years only.

Open
Races open to any horses.

Bumper
Races at the end of the card, flat meetings only.

Claiming race
Races open to a horses that can be claimed for an amount, after the race has finished.

Selling race
Races open to a horses in that the winner, must be put up for auction, after the race has finished.

Stakes race
Races open to all horses that must carry the same weight.

Handicap race
Races open to horses that carry a weight according to its form and calibre. The top horse is number 1, and carries the most weight.
