Prices

When you place a bet, on the Internet, or with a high street bookies, you will have two options.

1. Take the price at the time you place the bet.
This will mean that your price is fixed to the figure taken. The price for that horse will continue to fluctuate, it may go up, or down, but the price you have taken is the price you will get paid out at.
This is unless you have placed the bet with 'Best odds', or 'Guaranteed odds', which is mostly available only on internet betting, then you will get paid at the S.P. if it is bigger than the price you have taken.

2. Leave the price. You will get paid what it ends up at the start of the race. This is the 'starting price', or S.P. as it is commonly known.
If you can take the price with 'Best odds', or 'Guaranteed odds' then you should, as you get whichever is the higher price

Now, nobody knows exactly which price will be the better when you place the bet, unless you have some knowledge and think that the price may get worse. All prices change throughout the day, both up and down, and is govened by the amount of money placed on the horse throughout the industry.

If a small amount of money is being placed on a horse throughout the industry, then the price will get pushed out, and get bigger.

If a large amount of money is being placed on a horse throughout the industry, then the price will get pushed out, and get smaller.

Initially the market dictates the price of that horse from the 'Tissue Price' in the Racing Post or the now defunct Sporting Life. Nowadays the price is made from what price Betfair has been trading at during night and the previous evening. This gives the bookies their 'Tissue Price' and most fancied horses will have the price cut before, or as they release their prices at about 10am to 11.30 am in the morning.

If you can take the price with 'Best odds', or 'Guaranteed odds' then you should at all times. This is because it is a generous bonus, which can make large differences to a multiple bet such as a Lucky 15, no matter how many winners. This takes away the annoyance out of trying to guess as to whether you should, or should not take the price. When considering which bookmakers to open accounts with, only sign up with bookmakers that offer this 'Best odds', or 'Guaranteed odds' bonus, such as Bet 365, William Hill, Paddy Power,Ladbrokes, Betfred, Victor Chandler and Tote. Remember, this bonus is available on all races online only, this is not available on all races in High Street branches, and some do not offer it at all.

An additional advantage of the online bookmakers, is the ease in which you can compare all the odds easily for value. Otherwise you have to get in your car, and travel around the separate bookies, enquiring in each to find out what the highest price is.

Now you can just click a button! If Tote is 10/1 and Bet 365 is 14/1 then you will be able to see this easily, and place your bet without leaving your chair. I have put links on the right and you can take any free bets that they offer when opening a new account.

So, to bullet point you-
1. Sign up to some bookmakers to get the value.
2. Look to make sure they ALL offer 'Best odds' or 'Guaranteed odds'
3. Before placing a bet check to see which ones offer the higher price.
4. Always take 'Best odds' or 'Guaranteed odds' as you place the bet.
